Hot tub and spa wiring
Hot Tub Wiring Grimsby
Get your new hot tub wired with a dedicated circuit and GFCI disconnect so it's ready to fill and run.
Wiring your hot tub the right way
Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, often 40 to 60 amps depending on the model, and a GFCI-protected disconnect within sight of the tub. Water and electricity don't mix, so placement, grounding and bonding all have to meet the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
We wire new tubs and replacements, and check that your panel has the capacity before the tub arrives.
What hot tub wiring includes
Capacity check
We confirm your panel has room for the tub's circuit, along with your other loads.
Dedicated circuit
A new 240-volt circuit sized to the tub's nameplate, run in rated cable or conduit.
GFCI disconnect
A GFCI spa disconnect mounted where the code allows, so the tub can be shut off safely.
Bonding and inspection
Bonding as required and an ESA permit and inspection.
Hot Tub Wiring in Grimsby: Planning the Install
- Send us the tub's model or spec sheet and show us where it will sit.
- We check the panel and plan the wiring route to the tub.
- You get a written quote, and we file the ESA permit.
- We run the circuit and mount the disconnect, ideally before the tub is delivered.
- Once the tub is in place, we make the final connection and test it.
If your panel is full, a panel upgrade may be needed first. More on our electrician in Grimsby, Ontario home page.
Before your hot tub arrives
- Get the model's electrical spec sheet from the dealer (voltage and amperage)
- Pick the location and make sure it's clear of overhead lines
- Have us check panel capacity before you commit to a tub size
- Book the electrical rough-in before delivery day
- Plan a level, solid base, such as a pad or reinforced deck
How Much Does Hot Tub Wiring Cost?
Hot tub wiring costs depend mainly on the distance from the panel to the tub, whether the wire runs overhead, underground or through the house, the size of the circuit, and whether the panel has room. We give you a written quote after looking at the panel and the tub location.
Hot Tub Wiring questions
Can I plug my hot tub into a regular outlet?
Only small plug-and-play tubs designed for 120 volts. Most hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt circuit.
Where can the disconnect go?
It has to be within sight of the tub and at the distance the code requires. We place it where it meets code and is easy to reach.
Should the wiring be done before the tub arrives?
Yes. It's easiest to run the circuit first, then make the final connection once the tub is in place.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. Hot tub wiring needs an ESA permit, which we file.
